Our Commonwealth

Our Commonwealth was a vibrant, year-long project celebrating 18 extraordinary individuals across Sandwell who make our communities stronger, kinder, and more connected. Created to mark the staging of the Commonwealth Games 2022, this initiative shone a spotlight on the unsung heroes who support others and enrich the communities we call home.

Through film, photography, oral history, and performance, Our Commonwealth brought to life the diverse stories of resilience, generosity, and community spirit that define Sandwell. The project featured a touring exhibition of portraits by acclaimed photographer Anand Chhabra, 18 life story recordings, and two captivating new films by Lauren Hatchard and Joseph Potts. We also hosted a series of creative participatory workshops across the area, inviting residents to share their own stories and perspectives. Together, these elements wove a rich tapestry of experiences, honouring the people who make our communities stronger and more connected.

This project is a testament to the power of community and the shared values that unite us all. By capturing these stories, we aimed to reflect the pride, connection, and inspiration that people find in Sandwell.

The project was funded by the Sandwell MBC and Arts Council England
